Catalogue of demands


The carpet trade must make it clear to the manufacturers / exporters / suppliers of thecountries of origin that sales of hand knotted carpets in Europe will stagnate if seriousmeasures are not taken to combat illegal child labour.

 

The following conditions are the fundamental rules for order placement and they supplement

the existing selling conditions in a legally binding manner:

 

1    The carpet manufacturer / exporter / supplier commits himself not to produce /

      supply carpets manufactured with the involvement of illegal child labour.

 

2    Bonded Labour is particularly wretched and inhumane. As far as Bonded Labour is

      still practiced it must be abolished immediately.

 

3    The production of carpets takes place under humane working conditions.

 

4    The manufacturers / exporters / suppliers commit themselves to respect the labour

      laws of the country concerned.

 

5    Children of carpet knotters must have the possibility of school attendance.  

      Correspondingly, the manufacturers / exporters / suppliers commit themselves,

      should no state-run school exist, to finance the construction of schools as well as their

           

 6    Basic medical care for carpet knotters and their families must be ensured in all

      enterprises of the manufacturers / exporters / suppliers and their subcontractors.

 

7    The manufacturers / exporters / suppliers and their subcontractors pay their

      employees the minimal salary mandatory in their respective country.

 

8.   The manufacturers / exporters / suppliers agree to the selling conditions being

      inspected, possibly with the assistance of aid organizations.   

 

9    The manufacturers / exporters / suppliers are aware of the fact that in the case of

      violation of  the selling conditions, they will be registered on a .black list.

  

In the case of violation of the selling conditions, the buyer has the right to withdraw immediately from the contract and exclude the seller from further deliveries. The buyer reserves the right to make the seller liable for damages resulting from failure of performance.
